This Fourth of July I am reflecting on our Declaration of Independence, including this passage:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
It gives me chills every time I read it — what a powerful declaration that, hundreds of years later, continues to shape our country and our world for the better. We witnessed historic developments this past week alone as America strives toward ‘a more perfect union.’
Many challenges remain for citizens in Detroit and our surrounding region, as well as our country as a whole. The promise of equal opportunity for all Americans has yet to be realized and that fact motivates me every day to fight for greater social justice, economic fairness and progressive values in the Halls of Congress.
My love of our nation fortifies my spirit and my heart in this fight, and I promise to always serve you to the best of my ability as your Member of the United States House of Representatives.
