BREAKING: President Obama Strongly Endorses Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence’s Re-Election
WASHINGTON, DC – President of the United States Barack Obama gave his formal endorsement to Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence of Michigan’s 14th District today. “I’m strongly endorsing Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence for re-election. She’s been a strong partner of mine in Congress, working hard on the issues that matter to the American people and I’m glad to call her my friend,” said President Obama.
“Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence is a proven leader fighting for her district. Please stand with me and cast your vote for Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence,” said President Obama.
“I’m honored to earn the President’s support,” said Lawrence. “I’m committed to keep working hard, fighting for the citizens of my district, and it means a lot to me that the President of the United States thinks I’m worthy of his endorsement.”
During her first term in Congress, Lawrence has quickly risen in leadership ranks, serving as Freshman Whip as well as a Senior Whip within her party. She formed the
bipartisan Congressional Skilled Workforce Caucus and serves as its co-chair and was recently named co-chair of the Adoption Coalition in Congress. Her committee assignments are Oversight and Government Reform, on which she serves as a subcommittee Ranking Member, and Small Business.
Prior to serving in Congress, Lawrence was Mayor of Southfield for 14 years. She previously served on the Southfield City Council, including as President, and the Southfield School Board, including as President. Her leadership background includes time leading the National Association of Democratic Mayors and on the board of the United States Conference of Mayors.
Michigan’s 14th Congressional District includes parts of Detroit and West Bloomfield Township, as well as all of Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park, Grosse Pointe Shores, Grosse Pointe Woods, Hamtramck, Harper Woods, Keego Harbor, Lathrup Village, Oak Park, Orchard Lake Village, Pontiac, Royal Oak Township, Southfield and Sylvan Lake.
Two other candidates are seeking the 14th District Democratic nomination. The election is held on August 2nd, 2016.
